Melbourne, via Hokitika. Dec. 12. The conflict between the two Houses has been settled, the Council giving way on the Education Bill, which has been passed as it was originally left to the Assembly. In the Diseases of Stock Bill the Council also gave way. A Bill to increase the judges' salaries by £500 each was strongly opposed. A small fraction of the Assembly sat till seven this morning, and the Bill eventually pn=2-ed. The prorogation is fixed for next Tuesday. The New Zealand despatch relative to the mail service has been forwarded to Sydney, and a reply received. A reply has been received from Commodore Stirling, declining the Victorian offer of assistance in the South Seas.
Mr Kane, secretary of the Board of Education, died on Sunday. . »,*- * r The Chamber of Commerce has passed resolutions in favor of the Suez mail route, and prompt action by the Government wi;h reference to the Imperial offer. The advisability of communication with America was admitted. A public meeting has been held with reference to sending the islanders.kidnapped by the Carl to their respective homes. A deputatiou waited ou the Government, who staled that it was more an Imperial than a colonial oblinruion. The Government declined to.act without the Imperial sauction.
The schooner Katueran was wrecked on King's Island ; the crew was saved. The schooner was insured in the Derweiit office.
The Bangalore, with the mails. Iff. (?n!le Nov. 25. She is expected at Melbourne on Sunday or Monday.
The education debate in Sydney has been adjourned till Tuesday.
A large fire has occurred in Hunter street, Newcastle; several buildings were destrojed. . ' . The Chief Justice of South Australia was sworn in as acting-Governor. It has been resolved to abandon the infantry force at Sydney.
Some of the Adelaide fields will yield thirty bushels to the acre. The locusts have not affected the crops much.
Fullon, charged with complicity in the Carl murders, has been further remanded at Sydney. Dγ Murray gave evidence.
There was a heavy thunderstom this ing which interrupted the Sydney and Ade< laide lines.
