— -r-+- -r-? Hokitika, Dec. 17. Messrs Mark Sprot and Co. report having sold 197 head of cattle, averaging £6 16s per head, and 516 cross-bred wethers at 14s 3d per head. [N.Z. Associated Press Telegrams.] Auckland, Dec. 16. The ship Helen Penny has sailed for Lyttelton. A waterman named Mason and two others were drowned at the Thames, by a capsize of a boat. A party has started to work iron stone. The Council has been prorogued. The Superintendent in his speech said, the failure of the vote of £2000 has rendered it impossible for Mm to comply with the Council's desire for the transfer of the police. He had become convinced that responsible government was a mistake where the Superintendent was elected by the people, as tending to divided authority. It was ac error of judgment on his part ever conceding it. • '' "' -'" -' '"•■ A vote of thanks was passed to Mr O'Borke for his services as Speaker. DUNEDIK, Dec. 17. The Chamber of Commerce proposes a petition that the subsidised Fiji steamer should run through to the Southern ports, The Dunedin Jockey Club's programme shows £1100. They intend to institute a Derby for 1874, and a large annual handicap on the same principle as the Melbourne cup. The Synod has closed. A motion in favor of communicating with other Protestant Churches regarding the expediency of combining in the erection of churches for joint use in thinly peopled districts, was negatived by 6 to 4. Bluff, Dec. 17. The Tararua «has arrived from Dunedin, and sails for Melbourne at three to day.
