Eeefton, Sept. 11. The lock-np is crowded with prisoners.' There is only one cell 6 x 14, and they are all huddled together. A gaol was promised eight months ago, but is not commenced. There are only two police to guard and do duty in the whole town. The following are the prisoners:—Three for larceny, two on suspicion of wilful murder, two for shooting with intent, three for drunkenness, three debtors; warrants arc out for three others. Their arrest is deferred, there being no room. Vukedts, September 11. The Provincial Gazette contains an advertisement of tenders for the extension of the Bluff wharf ; payment to be made in land. The Heart of Oak, Carrick range, fortnight's work, produced 267 ounces from 212 tons,
A freehold claim of the Shag Valley company is being worked with good prospects. While towing the whale yesterday, from Waikouaiti to the Otago Heads, two more rose near the boats, and one was captured, which is estimated to yield eight tuns. E. C. Evatt, who was arrested in Melbourne on a charge of embezzling £200 from his employers, Murray, Roberts ond Co., was committed for trial to-day. Steam was got up in one of the locomotives at Port Chalmers yesterday, and with about thirty gentlemen on it, was run through the tunnel, crowds receiving it at the other side, amidst enthusiastic cheering. Auckland, Sept. 11. The Overlin, brig, has arrived from Newcastle. She left on September 3rd. The captain states that the cable is in working order again. Congratulatory messages were sent from Darwin, and English news had arrived in reply. The Overlin brings no papers. The Alexandra sailed for Sydney with fifty diggers for Queensland. Caledonians are looking up again.
