THS SUPERINTENDENT AND THE LYTTELTON TIMES.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —I see the Lyttelton Times made a statement in its issue of Saturday last, to the effect that the Superintendent was in communication with the General Government as to the desirableness of dissolving the Council. It states tbe precise day on which the correspondence was sent to the Government, aud this, coupled with the fact that one of the proprietors of the Lyttelton limes is a member of the General Government, must leave no doubt that the Tsmes must hav.e had its information from the very best authority, viz., the General Government, or one of themselves. At the same time, I have all along noticed that it is usual for the Lyttelton Times when speaking of his Honor, to use such phrases as "The public are beginning to think," "It is currently rumoured," "We have had it from the best authority," "The public will no doubt agree with ns," " Which, if true," "It is generally understood," &c, &c., Sec, Sec— that the Superintendent is guilty of so and so. I have frequently noticed, however, that the information from the best authority of the Lyttelton Times is not as a rule borne out by facts, and the public are beginning to think, and your readers have come to the conclusion, it is generally understood, and the public will no doubt agree with mc that the last assertion of the Times with regard to thc Superintendent has no truth whatever in it. I am, yours, Sec, Anti-Lyre. Christchurch, May 11, 1872.
