John M'Gill was dismissed with a caution. Drunkenness.—Thomas Ecesc was dismissed with a caution. Breach of Police Ordinance.—Patrick Ryaii and — Ryan his wife were summoned for using abusive and threatening language towards Thomas Jones, calculated to provoke a breach of the peace. The informant asked to be allowed to withdraw the information as Ryan had apologised for what had occurred, and in consideration of his wife and family he desired not to proceed further in the case. His Worship declined to allow the case to be withdrawn. When the information was laid by the complainant he stated that he was in danger of his life. There had been several disturbances in that neighbourhood, and on public gronnds he could not allow this case to • drop. From the evidence adduced it appeared that on the 2nd May, as complainant was going to the blacksmith's shop, Ryan abused him ; complainant also accused him of swearing falselyjn the case of Ryan v. Ryan, and threatened to be revenged. Ryan's wife was the first to speak, and she also made use of abusive language towards complainant. In reply to the Bench the complainant stated that he was not anxious to withdraw his charge from any threats that had been made, but because Ryan had made a solemn declaration not to annoy or threaten him again, and had also taken the pledge for five years. I In the course of the evidence it came out on theithinst. defendant had created a disturbance at the Wheat Sheaf Hotel, and his Worship ordered an information to be laid, and as all the witnesses were present the case was heard at once. Mrs Flynn, wife of the landlord of the Wheatsheaf Hotel, stated that Ryan came there the worse for liquor, and because she refused him drink he swore at her. Afterwards his conduct was such that she was obliged to leave the bar. He theu helped himself to drink. Mrs Grainger also gave evidence as to Ryan's misconduct in the kitchen. The case as against Mrs Ryan was dismissed with a caution. In disposing of the case as against Ryan, the Bench remarked that the neighbourhood had ou several occasions been disturbed by the defendant. When the complainant Jones laid this information, he said his life was in danger, The witnesses had given their evidence very reluctantly with the exception of Mrs Flynn and Mrs Grainger, whose evidence went to show that Ryan had behaved in a disgusting manner. It was only the other day that he was very heavily fined. The Bench did not wish to make the penalty fall on his family, or they would have no hesitation in imprisoning him, He would be required to Hud sureties to keep the peace for twelve months, himself in £100, with one surety in £50, and in default to be imprisoned for six months.
