BOROUGH COUNCIL.

LYTTELTOX. Monday, May 6

The Conncil held its usual weekly meeting. Present—His Worship tho Mayor, Councillors Chalmers, Grubb, Kenner, Webb, Graham.

The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed.

Received during the week—£7 8s Bd, Passed for payment —£23 4s 4d.

The following correspondence was read :—

From Captaiu A. Swauson, complaining of the damage done to his property by the gullies being choked up during the late storms. It was discussed, and it was then resolved that the damage be made good.

A letter from H. R. Webb, Esq., chairman of the Borough School Committee, asking if the Council would offer any opposition to their applying for the Market reserve, for the erection of the borough school. His Worship explained what the committee intended doing, and also that the ground could be leased by his Houor without their leave being asked, but the committee preferred coming to the Council and asking thorn to co-operate in the subject.

Cγ Grubb strongly urged upon the Council that they should do all they could to further the committee's views upon the matter.

Councillor Graham a'so spoke on the matter, advocating that the Council should use their best endeavors to forward the views of the committee.

Cγ. Kenner was opposed to the Council moving in the matter, and moved—" That the solicitor be requested to state whether the Council had any power over the laud." Cr. Webb seconded the motion. Cr. Graham moved an amendment, which was lost.

Cr. Grange moved a further amendment— "That this Council will be only too happy to co-operate with the school committee in obtaining what they required of the unoccupied portion of the Market reserve, and sections No. 35 and 36.

Cγ. Grubb seconded the amendment, and in doiug so again urged upon the Council the necessity of their assisting the committee in every way they could —the schools would, he felt sure, be a credit to the town.

The amendment was put and carried, with two dissentients, Crs. Kenner and Webb.

Cr. Chalmers gave a report of the state of Ticehurst road, and recommended that the road should be made over to the Council.

It was resolved to write to the Rev. B. Dudley on the matter.

It was resolved that the Estates Committee form a standing committee to act as a medium between the Council and the school committee.

The question of water supply was again mooted, and after a ehort discussion the matter was adjourned for a week.

With respect to lighting the town, it was resolved to call for tenders at the cud of the present month.
