POPULAR AMUSEMENT AND ENTERTAINMENT ASSOCIATION.
A committee meeting of the above association was held yesterday afternoon, at four o'clock, iv the City Council Chambers. Mr M. B. Hart was voted to the chair. There were present —Messrs H. Wynn Williams J A. Bird, G. Gordon (hou. sec), Mitchell, and' Captain Wilson.
The accounts in connection with the entertainment given last Thursday were brought up and passed for payment. The total receipts taken at the doors" amounted to £14 l>3 7d, and the expenses £14. 6s 8d leaving a trifling balance in hand. '
The minutes of the last meeting having been rend and confirmed, the question arose regarding the future prices of admieeion.
Mr Williams thought it perhaps would be advisable in the interests of the association to try the experiment of making the charge of admission sixpence all round, but it waa ultimately decided to give auother entertainment at the same rate of admission.
A discussion took place as to fixing the date of the next entertainment, so as not to clash with the concert given by the Canterbury Rowing Club, which had been arranged to come off on the night originally fixed for the second entertainment of the association.
Mr Williams thought it would be a good plan to pass over the next week, and commence, as it were, dc noro on Thursday, the 23rd iust., and continue the entertainments for the remainder of tho season every Thmsday fortnight. An objection was urgtd agaiust Thursday, the 23rd, being chosen, as the following night, the 24th of May, beiug the Queen's Birthday, the hall had been let to the Christchurch Christy Minstrels for their entertainment.
Mr Mitchell moved that the next entertainment be given on Tuesday the 21st, and continued for the remainder of the season oa every alternate Tuesday.
Mr Bird thought the entertainments should be postponed until the first Thursday after the Queen's Birthday, on account of the advantages offered by the late train from Ly ttelton, both with regard to parties taking part in. and visitors to, the entertainments.
Mr Mitchell's motion was then peconded by Captain Wilson and carried.
The hon. secretary stated that his Honor the Superintendent had consented to take the chair at the next entertainment. It was decided to engage the services of Mr Parker and the band for the remainder of the Beries of entertainments, as previously arranged for.
The secretary informed the committee that Major Wilson, C.8., had kindly offered to take the chair and contribute an item to the next entertainment but one of the Association.
