ROAD BOARDS.
EICCABTON. The ordinary, meeting of the Board was held yesterday, all the members present; Mr Thomas Pavitt in the chair. The minutes of the last meeting, were read and confirmed ; .aleo, the minutes of general meeting of ratepayers held at Riccartou on the 19th inst. A letter was received from Mr Greensey, asking to be allowed to take six or ten loads of gravel from the river bed. The Board granted the request, provided it was carted in dry weather. A letter was read from the Secretary for Public Works, stating that a further instalment of 25 per cent of the grant from the Provincial and General Government was available. A letter was read from the Avon Boad Board, in reply, refusing to clear the Papanui drain, and suggesting that a commission be appointed to decide the question in dispute. The Chairman was directed to consults the Board's solicitor in the matter. It was decided that ; a deputation from the Board wait on the Provincial Secretary, with a view to having a clause inserted in the liew RoSds Ordinance, compelling owners" or occupiers of land to clear water courses running through or bounding their property. A letter was received from Mr Page, requesting the Board to devise some plan for the better'drainage of the swamp on- the north side of the Wairarapa road* The Surveyor iwas directed to inform Mr Page thai-the Board would take the necessary steps to levy a special rate, provided the owners and occupiers of land-would consent to the present drain being widened and deepened. . . The Surveyor was directed to prepare specifications, and invite tenders by Wednesday, the sth June, for the formation of about 120 chains of the Kaiapoi and Prebbleton junction road. The Board directed the surveyor to give notice to Messrs Sutcliff and Buckley to remove the gorse from the ditches on Gardner's road, as much damage was being caused by the water being backed up on the road. ; The Surveyor reported' that the Styx drain had been cleared out, also that the Wairarapa creek had been cleared from the Harewood and Fendaltown junction road to the Waiararapa junction road, and that the drainage of the Bush Inn road would be completed this'week. It was decided that the gravel "for . the maintenance of the main roads be .spread as early as possible. l
The Surveyor was directed to write to the Secretary for Public Works, and request that draine through Hagley Park should be closed, to prevent the water from draining back oh' property in this district,"", ~..,, r ,. The monthly report and approved, accounts for work done, were passed, and theIBoard .adjourned until Wednesday, the 6th i June. —
