NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY.
We condense the following report from a Wellington contemporary of the business transacted on Saturday and Monday last:— Dr. Hector was admitted to the degree of M.D. The Rev. William James Habens was admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Arts. The Key. William Chambers Harris, the Yen. James Wilson, and the Very Her. Henry Jacobs were admitted to the degree of M.A. The following resolution was carried:— '• That the advisableness of obtaining from public and prirate sources a local endowment in connection with the University for the promotion of further lectures and the establishment of scholarships be urged upon the several affiliated institutions." The report of the committee appointed to consider the subjects for examination for scholarships was laid on the table. A telegram from Mr Curtis, of Nelson, was read, stating that the Rev. G. H. Johnston consented to act as supervisor. A letter from the Rev. H. Harper, of Hokitika, was read, asking what steps he should take to obtain an Ad Eundem degree from the University. Dγ Alexander Johnston was admitted to the degree of Doctor of Medicine. The supplementary report of the Select Committee on the subject of the books to be used was agreed to. The following resolutions were carried :— " That members of the Council not residing at the place of meeting be reimbursed their actual expenses, and receive £1 per day during their attendance at the Council." " That the Chancellor be requested to forward to the Governor the report required by the 16th section of the New Zealand University Act, and that the report be entered on the minutes." " That the Chancellor write to the Colonial Secretary, pointing out that the statement contained in the Order in Council on the 19th Feb., 1872, to the effect that the sum of £3000 had been paid to the University out of the consolidated fund for the year ending the 30th June, 1872, is an error, inasmuch as the only sum paid to the University from the consolidated fund was, as will be seen on reference to the correspondence between the Chancellor and Mr Sewell, Actiog Colonial Treasurer, paid on the 10th of June, 1871, and was in the public accounts included in the expenditure for the financial year ending the 30th June, 1871, to which year it strictly by law belonged."
