Public Notices. I

hint to " John King " that the public might perhaps say he did not possess the journals, but "John King " did not.care for the public, and informed mc that he would treat my note with "silent contempt." I was thus obliged to fall back upon what little " documentary evidence" I possessed myself— viz., "John King's" letter of the 7th inst., from which I take the information about St. Andrew's, and the London University Calendar. These documents I am willing to chow to anyone who wishes to examine them. I will send to England, however, by the very next mail, for the medical journals published about the time St. Andrew's lost ite privilege of manufacturing doctors at twenty-five pounds a-head, and I will supply " John King" with more "■ documentary evidence" than he has any idea of, or even wishes for. Now, Sir, who wrote the letter? Most distinctly, not" John King," I don't mean to deny that " John King " wrote it in the same way that a schoolboy writes his copy, but who " egged him on " ? Even " Wholesale Grocers" in New Zealand, are not in the habit of taking in and filing the medical journals, so that they can refer to them after $he lapse of nine years. ; _ The letter bears internal evidence of having been written by a medical man. Who are the most likely to sound the praises of St. Andrew's 1 Why,/those who possess that degree. How many doctors in Christchurch are Graduates of St. Andrew's ? Only one, "J. D. Frankish," who has the honor of attending " John King," and therefore most likely to supply him with information? "J. D. FrankisV , Whose buggy and pair stand for hours at a certain v Wholesale and Retail Grocery Store in Cashel street ?" "J. D. Frankish's." In looking over an early -number of "John King's" favorite journal, the " Medical Circular," under the head of "Hints to Quacks." I found the following :—"Don't say you are Jones, when you know you are Smith," which may be extended into " Pon't say you are " John King" when you are "■ . - ," well, no matter. .How, sir, allow mc to offer "John King" a little advice. Let him not meddle again in matters medical. Literature is not his forte. Let him direct his undoubtedly great talents to the development oii ibejfSoap and candle industry. There lam sure he will be a great light, and if he has any strong desire for scientific pursuits, he can in his trade find pleasure and, profit in studying anatomically, pathologically, and chemically, the adipose tissues of the ox, sheep, or hog. Now, sir, a word to Dr Frankish. and I have done. Dr Frankish is striving for popularity. I will indicate the true path thereto. It is by the steady, constant, and honest pTaotice of our noble profession. It was not by charioteering and malevolent letter-writing, that a Galen, a Harvey, a Hunter, an Addisori, and an Abernethy rose to fame and dying,; left " footprints on the sands of time," but by the earnest study and faithful practice of our art; and the same means of usefulness and distinction are open to their followers through all time. Let. Dγ Frankish take the. hint kindly given, and he will no doubt rise to the honorable position in society to which he is entitled. I beg to say, sir, that so far as I am concerned this controversy must end here. I will not discuss medical topics with any one ' but a medical man, I therefore say— " Farewell, my friends ; farewell, my foes : j My love with these, my peace with those; | To each and all a fair good night, i With rosy dreams and slumbers light." ! I am, sir, yours, &a., 8. A. PATRICK. Cashel street, Nov. 14. 1871. 11-16 6447
