ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
The usual monthly meeting of the council of the above society was held yesterday afternoon, at the Literary Institute. Present —Dr LI. Powell, Messrs"C. C. Bowen. C. R. Blakiston. Brcadfoot, Hanmer, Boys. J. R. Hill. W. D. Carruthers, W. H. Wynu Williams, aud Johnson (curator).
Iv the absence of the president. J. T. Peacock. Esq.. C. R. Blakiston, Esq., took the chair.
The Secretary said that from what he had learned from the Curator. Mr Bills was not likely to come to Canterbury, as he had accepted an engagement with the Otago Society to return to England immediately for another shipment of birds. He had received a letter from Mr Clark, offering his services to go home to England to bring out birds for the society, which he would read.
The lettter was then read, and after some discussion it was first agreed to discuss the Curator's report, as some portion of that bore upon the question before the meeting.
The Curator's report was then read. He reported that Dr Hector and Mr David Craig had joined the society as new members during the month. The monthly receipts from sales and subscriptions had been £27 14s Id, the balance in hand from the present month being £5 14s (id. The estimated expenditure for April was £12. He also referred to the fact of Mr Bills not being likely to visit Canterbury, and mentioned that two or three persons, amongst whom was Mr Clark, had offered their services to the society to bring out the birds required. Some discussion ensued, after which
Mr Hanmer suggested that it would be better to write to England and ask Mr Ottywell, the agent for Canterbury there, to be kind enough to enquire amongst intending immigrants for a man capable of taking care of the birds during the voyage to New Zealand. He felt sure that there were many who would be glad to undertake the task for the sake of receiving a free passage.
Mr C. C. Bowen thought the suggestion of Mr Hanmer was a veiy practical one.
Mr Bowen then moved—"That a subcommittee be appointed to draw up a letter to Mr Ottywcll, to purchase the birds specified in former resolutions, the expenses not to exceed £500."
Mr Broadfoot seconded the motion which was agreed to.
Mr Hanmer moved " That Mr Ottywell be requested to obtain the services of a competent person to take charge of the birds on the voyage, and that the sub-committee forward the letter of instructions by this mail." Mr Bowen seconded the motion. Mr Hill thought the motion brought forward by Mr Hanmer was the best arrangement that could be made. The motion was earned. Some discussion took place respecting the appointment of a treasurer, the present one, Mr Boys, expressing a wish to be relieved of the office. Ultimately, Mr Boys consented, at the urgent request of the council, to hold the office temporarily.
After some further consideration, the meeting adjourned.
