LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The weekly meeting was held on Monday evening. Present —The Mayor, Councillors Allwright, Bunker, Young, Stout, Cummins, and Chalmers.

The following correspondence was read :— To Mr DOyly, solicitor to the borough, asking for advice as to the election of two Councillors for the Borough, there having been no nomination upon the day appointed. From Mr DOyly in answer thereto. From Mr G. Thornton, Provincial Engineer, aeking

for permission to deposit earth from the Hospital excavations upon the hollow in the road near that place: it was resolved that permission be granted. From the Secretary of Public Works, informing the Council that a surveyor cannot be spared to lay off the line of etreet on Norwich Quay, as requested by the Council, but that the Chief Surveyor will give every information to any one employed by the Council for that purpose. From Messrs Taylor and Co, calling attention to the state of the footpath in front of their store in Norwich Quay. From Mr H. Dunsford, offering the Council 3$ per week for the use of the weigh-bridge office. It was decided that the ofler should be accepted, upon the condition that one month's notice on either eide should terminate the agreement, and that no repairs were required from the Council. The Foreman of Works' report was read, giving an account of the works that had been j done during the week, and requiring certain took for use, which was referred to the Works Committee.

The Clerk was directed to reply to Messrs Taylor and Co.'s letter, and inform them that their request should be attended to as soon as the material could be obtained.

The report of the Works Committee was read, but calls for no remarks.

The following amounts were passed:— Weekly pay sheet, £3 18s ; petty cash, ss. A long discussion ensued upon the letter received from the Provincial Secretary with reference io the line of road on Jforwich Quay, near Messrs Hargreaves and Co.'s store. It was flnally allowed to stand over until next meeting.

The Council then adjourned
