REPORT ON ON THE EXISTING STATE OF THE TUNNEL.
Bt G. Thoekxon, 0.X., Railway Engineeb, Mat 3, 1869. Railway Engineer's Office, Christohurch, May 3,1869. Sib,—Since my preliminary report on the eiiiting state of the tunnel on the 19th ult. I have again examined it, and the conclusion I arrive at is that a large expenditure will be necessary in constructing side walls and roofing certain parts of it over as per the eimeked statement. I also forward an estimate of the cost of the tfOrk, amounting to £2930, which expenditure I consider necessary to ensure anything like a degree of safety. Even -with this outlay there will still remain places that woula otherwise be best protected with brick wbrk\ but which may; with careful watching, da without, at any rate for come time ; as I eta anxious to keep the expenditure within the smallest limit, consistent with safety. The permanent way in the tunnel is not satisfactory. Many of the rails have been bent, originally with the falling rock on being blasted, and have not been straightened or removed., . It is necessary these should be replaced with straight ones. 1 have directed the worst of these to be taken out and replaced. I have the honor to be, ... : ' Your obedient servant, G. Thobhtok, Railway Engineer. The Secretary for Public Works.
