CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.

The usual weekly meeting of the City Council was held last evening at seven o'clock. Present —The Mayor and all the Councillors. The minutes of the preceding meeting were read and confirmed. '■ ■ i \ The Town Clebk reported the receipts during the week to be £122 18a 6d. The overdraft at the bank was £346 11s 9d. Several accounts amounting to £152 15a 2d were pae&ed and ordered to be paid.,. /

The City Subvbyob reported—That tenders would balaid before the Council for the formation of the East and South Town Belts from the Ferry roai to the gas-works ; also for the formation of the South Town Belt from Madras street to Colombo street. That the Publio Works Committee recommend tenders should be invited for ehingling Worcester street from the new bridge approaches to Antigua street. That Edmonda and Co. had completed their contract for the delivery of 500 yarde of stone channelling. That Mr McNamara's first quarter for keeping clear the River Avon of watercress expired on Ist May, and that the river was in very fair order. That two of the street lamps had been broken. The labor gang had been employed iv various public works throughout the city. The following tenders were considered :— East and South Town Belts, J. Foster, 19e 6d per chain ; James Padden, 19a per chain, also South Town Belt, 20s ; T. S. Lewis, 28 chains South Town Belt, £24, East Town Belt, £25 16s; East and South Town Belts, G. Steel, £14 ; South Town Belt, £20. Mr G. Steel's tendera were accepted, viz., for £14 and £20. It was decided to carry out the recommendation of the Public Works Committee as to shingling Worcester street from the ap« preaches to the bridge to Antigua street. Letter from Mr L. G. Cole, resigning hie office of Fire Inspector of the city of Christchurch. The resignation was accepted. Letter from Mr J. Ollivier, requesting the Council to appoint a special meeting on Thursday next, for the purpose of receiving a deputation from a number of the citizens who were desirous of presenting a testimonial to Hie Worship the Mayor. The Council then proceeded to ooneider the question of leaeing the cattle reeervee. Cγ Duncan said that Cγ B-uddenklau had discovered an Ordinance which had never been repealed—the Canterbury Association Reeervee Amendment Ordinance, 1857, and which directed that the money derived from the sale of certain lands should be set aside to purchase a cattle market for Christ* church. Or RuDDENKLitr said he thought that under that Act the Government was bound to establish a cattle market for the city. A committee, consisting of the Mayor and Crs Ruddenklau and Jameson, was appointed to investigate the matter. A cabman's license was transferred from T. C. Mullens to John Walker. Cγ Duncan moved —" That a general rate of one shilling in the pound, for the year 1869, be made on all rateable property within the city of Chrietchuroh, under the provisions of the Municipal Corporation Act, 1867." Cγ Sheppabd seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Cγ Duncan moved—" That the Town Clerk be instructed to summons a special meeting I for Monday next, at 7 p m, for the purpose of considering certain regulations and bye-laws." The motion was agreed to. J On the motion of Cγ Angus, the Council went into Committee to consider Mr Ollirier'e letter ; and it was resolved on the motion of Cr Jameson that the Council meet on Thursday next, at 3 p.m. The Council adjourned at 8.20 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday.
