CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.
Monday, April 5. The Council met last evening, at seven o'clock.
Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs Duncan, Ruddenklau, Calvert, Sheppard, Angus, Tombs, Jamieson, and Sawtell.
Tbe minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The Town Clerk reported the receipts of the past week to be £194 6s lOd, and the balance in the bank to be £330 18s Bd.
Several accounts, including salaries, were passed and ordered to be paid. A discussion took place on a bill for £27 from Dr Foster for drafting a Gas Bill, and ultimately Crs Angus and Sawtell were deputed to wait on Dr Foster with reference to the bill.
The City Surveyor reported that the prisoners had been employed during the past month in levelling Cranmer square. Also that the Gas Company purposed laying down mains in Madras street and the Ferry road north, and enquiring whether the lamp at the junction of Lichfield- and Madras streets should be lit with gas. The shingle had been carted and spread in Gloucester street to the East Town Belt, also to the greater part of the
East Town Belt, and Sf the weather Pf mi "ed the work would be done in a week. The report concluded by stating where the labor gang had been employed during the week. The lamp alluded to in the City Surveyor's report was ordered to bo lit with gas. Letter from the Telegraph Inspector, stating that the telegraph poles in Cranmer square would shortly be removed. Letter from Mr James Potts, of Antigua street, complaining of defeotive drainage of a block of ground in Montroal street south, whereby a nuisance was created. On the motion of Cr Duncan, it was resolved that if two-thirds of the inhabitants in that locality petitioned, the Council would do the work and levy a special rate on the inhabitants of the locality to pay for the same. The Publio Works Committee reported on the North Town Belt east of Colombo street, and recommended more complete drainage, and also that the sum of £30 be voted towards keeping the road passable for traffic -, also that Madras street be formed half width from the j Belt towards that portion which is formed and metalled, thus completing communication with the Belt. „-''-■ , The sum of £50 was voted for the works recommended by the Publio Works Committee. The Fire Brigade Committee reported that considering the near approach of the close of the financial year, they did not deem it desirable to make any alteration in the arrangements with respect to the office of Superintendent and Chief Fire Inspector, and recommend the Council at once to invite by advertisements applications for the office. They also recommended that No 2 hand-engine should be removed to where the Council bell now Btands, and that a shed should be erected for its reception, tho cost of which would be about £30. The committee also recommend that the Brigade be requested to be in readinesß up to twelve o'clock on the night ot the illuminations, on the arrival of Prince Alfred; also, that the steam fire-engine and two horses be kept in readiness for immediate use, and that the Brigade be supplied with refreshment to the extent of £5. Cr Jameson moved—"That the Council advertise at once for a person to fill the office of Superintendent of the Brigade and Chief Fire Inspector. Applications to be sent in by next Monday." I The motion was agreed to. The remainder of the report was adopted. The Inspectob of Nuisances reported that he had proceeded against Mr Thompson, a greengrocer in Colombo street, for a nuisance arising from the dirty Btate of his premises. ~ On the motion of Cr Sawtell, tho Inspector of Nuisances was directed to examine a fence which was obstructing a water course near Manning's brewery on the Ferry road. Drivers' licenses were granted to John Heard and Charles Hall and John Smith. A transfer was made of Walter Hartnoll's cab license to J. B. Dale. On the motion of Cr Jameson, seconded by Cr Duncan, it was resolved that notice be sent to Hartnoll to show cause why his driver's license should not be revoked for misconduct.
Cr Sawtell moved—" That his Honor the Superintendent be written to requesting him to convey the municipal reserves to the City Council as early as possible."
Cr Calyebt seconded the motion, which was agreed to. ? ■ • Or Sheppabd moved —"That the path beneath the verandah at the post-office be asphalted." Cr Tombs seconded the motion, whioh was agreed to. The Council then adjourned. .
