CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.

The usual weekly meeting of the City Council was held last evening, at seven o'clock. Present —His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Duncan, Angus, Jamieson, Tombs, Sheppard, Euddenklau, Calvert, and SawtellThe minutes of the preceding meeting were read and confirmed. On the motion of Or Cai/vert, the time for bringing up the report of the Sanitary Com* mittee was extended for a week. The Mayor said that he had received from Sir Gt. Grey, the late Governor, a report on a system of drainage to be adopted in the towns of Oxford, Eton, Windsor, and Abingdon, together with a report on the Bedford sanitary improvements. The Town Cdebk reported that the balance in the bank was £195 Oβ 2d. The Town Clebk reported that he had received during the week :—City Bate, 1868, £20 10s ; watering rate, £51 Is 7d ; Inspector of Nuisances, £5 Oa 4d ; driver's license, £1 2s 6d ; rents from Market-place, 17s; total, £78 11s sd. The pay.sheet for the past week amounted to £20 17s 6d, which was ordered to be paid. Several accounts were passed and ordered to be paid, including a sum of £10 2s 6d, expenses at the late fire. The City Surveyor reported that tenders would be laid before the Council for shingling Gloucester street from Durham street, to Antigua street; Kilmore street from Montreal street to Antigua street; and Peterborough street from Montreal street to Antigua street. That the contract for the formation of St Asaph street during the past week expired. The Public Works Committee recommend the following work]: —The shingling of Salisbury street and Peterborough street from Colombo street to Madras street. The stone channelling in High and Tuam streets has been completed during the week, and several short lengths are recommended to be laid down. The labor gang has been employed during the week in carrying out eeveral works recommended by the Council. Tenders were opened for shingling Gloucester, Kilmore, and Peterborough streets:— John Bent, 3s 6d per oubio yard; Charles Lewis, 3e 8d per cubic yard; John Dodd, 3s 8d per cubio yard j Henry Jackson, 3a 6d per cubic yard. The tender of Mr Jackson was accepted, Mr Bent's tender having been rejected as being informal. The Council resolved that the works recommended by the Public Works Committee should be carried into effect as early as poesible. Letter from the chairman of the Board of Conservators of. Canterbury Rivera,aaking for a return of the total amount of tha annual value of property in the city of Chrietchurch. The Town Clerk was directed to state in reply that the Council would furnish the amount of last year's valuation if required; but as a new valuation was being made the information would be furnished when that valuation was completed. Letter from Mr W. H. Mem, drawing attention to the necessity of shingling the footpath in St. Aeaph street between the Windmill road and the Lincoln road. Beferred to the Public Works Committee. Letter from Mr E. B. Bishop, suggesting the propriety of fencing in Cranmer square when the levelling of the square was com* pleted.
