CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.

The usual weekly meeting of the Council was held last night at seven o'clock. Present —The Mayor and all the Councillors The Town Cleek reported the receipt during the week of £69 17s 2d from various sources. ? The credit at the bank was stated to be £296 13s 3d. Various accounts, amounting to £117 18s Bd, wore passed and ordered to be paid, as were the salaries of the Council officials. _ The Surveyor's report was read and considered. It was moved by Cr Jameson that an advertisement should be inserted in~the local journals, warning the public against allowing ducks, fowls, &c, to wander in the streets, and cautioning the owners to keep them on their own premises. The resolution having been seconded, was carried unanimously. A letter was read- from some of the ratepayers in Lichfield street, drawing the attention of the Council to tho state of the footpaths in that district. The subject was referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter was read from Mr J. E* Graham thanking the Council for appointing him one of the city auditors.

" Cr Jameson stated that with regard to the Gaa Act, it had been advised by Dr Foster that it would be desirable to draft out the various clauses in the Act, as thoro were some clauses in it. which the City Council deemed objectionable. On the other hand, the Gas Company were willing to meet, ns far as possible, the wishes of the Council, but they objected to the terms of the Act being dictated by the Council. He (Cr Jameson) suggested that the matter might be discussed with the Gas Company in an amicable spirit. The following resolution, proposed by Cr Duncan, and seconded by Cr Sawtell, was carl .i e d : —« That the chairman of the Public i Works Committee, in conjunction with the [City Solicitor, be instructed to request an inI terview with the Chairman and Solicitor of the Gas Company to confer on the clauses of the proposed Gas Aot." A letter was read from Captain Wilson, as Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, Cr Jameson moved an addition to one of the bye-laws to the.effect that the engineer should be under yie direction of the Superintendent, and that immediately, or as soon as possible after the discovery ;of any breakage or other circumstance which may interfere with the proper working of the engine or plant, the same shall be reported to the Superintendent; and except in cases of emergency, the proposed repairs shall be submitted to[ him for his* sanction or approval. The motion was carried. TPhe Inspector's report, was j read.and considered. A carrier's licence was granted to Samuel Ellis. The Mayor said that the Reception Co'nmittee for; settling the details of the visit of HR.H. the Duke of Edinburgh had considered the subject. The Committee had determined to invite the co-operation of gentlemen outside the Council. Such a meeting had been held and influentially attended, and it had been resolved that a banquet or dejeuner should be got up, the expenses to be defrayed by the sale of tickets. A committee had been formed, Consisting ;of some of the principal citizens, with power to add to their number, to , carry. out the arrange-; ments, and each member was requested to interest himself in the success of the project.! He proposed that the Council should meet on Wednesday next, at the City Council office, at four p.m. Wit.ho regard to the procession, &0,. : he believed chat .all that coujd be .done at present had been'doneV As soon as his* Honor the Superintendent returned, he would seek an interview with him, and report the result to the Councilr With regard to the procession, he hoped to obtain Borne assistance from the Government for this purpose. He had been given fb understand that sueh 1 , would be the case, and altogether he trusted that a satisfactory reception would be provided, without trenching too far upon the rates.
