Feb. 24, 1.52 p.m. A Bpecial messenger has reached Colonel Whitmore with news from* Taranaki- that 200 Ngatimaniapotos are assembled near the White Cliffs, awaiting assistance. Colonel Haultain, on hearing of the murders, took from "Wanganui 100 Armed dotistabulaTy in. the Sturt. Colonel Whitmore hopes to spare 100 or 150 more, especially as some of Titokowaru's followers have seceded, and given information which puts Whitmore on the trail. The deputation from Taranaki have had an interview with the Governor, who said he regretted that he had no power to stop the troops. The Government promise to instruct Dr Pollen to raise a force on the gold fields of the sons of Taranaki settlers, tfcc, to be a purely Taranaki force. Although the deputation regret the Governor cannot detain the troops, yet, they are on the whole, satisfied with the Government's energy and promises. " • Details of the massacre are to hand. The natives professed the utmost friendliness and tomahawked ; the setj tiers unawares. The Airedale starts this afternoon; and removes the troops at Taranaki to Auckland on her trip up. 7.30 p.m. A meeting of J.P's took place late this afternoon, with a view to the temporary retention of tho troops. The London "Times? has a very strong article on the Poverty Bay massacre, which has been'telegraphed as involving the lives of fifty settlers and their.families. It says the colony has got into trouble through its culpable neglect and must get out of it unaided.
