No answer has yet been received.. : ' i: Mr • Gould said the committee appointed for thol purpose had considered the question of prizes, and' recommended various alterations in ; the catalogue* amongst ethers, that ten rams should constitute a pen, instead of five, as heretofore, and that there should be no restriction as to feeding. * With respect to other sheep, they had allowed the regulation to remain ss before, with the exception, of adding an additional prize for the best ewe ovet , eighteen months old, in order to-allow persons .who possessed only one good ewe an opportunity of exhibiting it. With regard to merino sheep; theyi thought that as merinos were bred so largely in the province, the number to be jhriwriari eaclrpen ought not to be reduced below five. The hon. sec. was instructed to obtain what clerical assistance he required, and to spend a sum not exceeding £25. The hon. sec. was instructed to write to Colonel Packo, drawing his attention to the fact of the proposed encampmont of volunteers taking place at the time fixed for holding the Agricultural Show. The Council then adjourned. CHRISTCHUKCH BOROUGH COUNCIL. The usual weekly meeting of the Council was held last night at seven o'clock. Present—the Mayor and all the Councillors, excepting Cr Sheppard, who sent a note of apology for hie absence. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. . The Town Clerk reported that the receipts during the last week wero £137 8s 9d, and that the overdraft at the Bank was £255 12s sd.

Accounts to the amount of £244 2s were passed. - Some discussion took place as to whether a sum of £54 163, being tho balan c of the contractor's account for the construction of Manchester street bridge, ehould bo paid until the Public Works Committee had reported upon the manner in which tho wotk had been executed, but the account was finally passed. The City Surveyor's Report was read. It states, among other things, that ho proposes in a few days' time to. advertise for tenders for the formation of Gloucester street from Madras street to Barbadoes stroefcj that bo has examined Mr Willmer's ground in Durham street, and done what ho could to aid that gentleman in getting rid of the stagnant water standing in his gardon, by clearing out tho side channel of the street; that Messrs Cooper and' Graham's contract timo for the completion of tho East Town belt from tho Ferry road to Gloucester street, expired on tho 17th inst., and there is still a fortnight's work remaining to bo done. : Tho following tenders for tho formation of Salisbury street from Durham to Colombo streets, a distance of eleven chains and threequarters, were opened : —Joseph Hadfield, £33 ; William Long, £47., Mr Hadfield's tender was accepted. The Surveyor was instructed to invite tenders for the formation of a part of Gloucester street. ~....■•• i .. ,; ■ :-.•■■. < ■ .'■ * : Messrs Cooper and Graham were granted an extension of fourteen days, for the completion of their contract. The following correspondence was: read :■— A letter from the Surveyor to tho Heathcote Road Board, stating that a member of that body hae been appointed, to confer with tho committee of the Borougli Council, on the subject of the drainage of the land in the neighbourhood of the gas works. Letters from Messrs J. M. Hey wood and Co., and Messrs Shand, Mason, and Co., enclosing an account for £21 14s. for a new concentric for the steam lire engine, supplied by the latter firm. . Messrs Shand, Mason, and Co., offer to leave it to the Borougli Council to decide whether they are entitled to payment, of the account or not, and ask for testimonials as to the working of tha engine.

The consideration of the payment of the account was postponed until next Monday evening ; and all correspondence oa the subjeei was ordered to be laid on the table at that time. A letter front Mr W. The omissions are much to be regretted; but fortunately if all the lost votea had been polled for any -one of tho uneuccesscandidates; it would not hare affeoted the result of the election. "The subject of forming the burgees roll under the 68th clause of the Act was considered by your committed, and the correotnees of that course is .confirmed by the written opinion of the solicitor to the Council, hereto appended. Tho matter had been standing over for a long timo, and ought to be settled. Cγ Jameson thought the proposal was & very awkward way to going to work, and that the details of tho report should be consider-* before the whole, was adopted. Tho Mayor thought it very desirable that tho by-laws proposed to bo adopted should ba very carefully considered by the Council, and moreover submitted to the opinion of tlicit legal adviser before being adopted.
