Pbbss Office, September 12. A little more animation has been, evinced during the past week \ U>e, fineness of the weather no doubt has contributed to the •light reaction, but apart from this, the spring at last appears to have fairly set in, and as a natural consequence we may reasonably expect a seasonable impetus to be given to trade. The fourth of the month passed off very satisfactorily; in /act, of late, a good fourth has become tbe ra|e in*tead of the exception. This should console us for the limited amonnt j of business transacted, as it indicates a sound and healthy trade; operations for some time past having been strictly confined to legitimate requirements. In the grain market we notice a decidedly improved feeling in ragard to wheat, and oats, tbe taao throughout the week being reassuring. Several email parcels of wheat have changed hands at an advance on last week's quotations,: holders evincing, no anxiety to quit. Sound wheat may now be placed at 6s to 6s 6d. Oata also have become firmer, considerable shipments of this' cereal" continue to he made to Australia and Auckland, the prices there leaving a small margin for the exporter. A few lots have been; purchased dtnahg the week at 2s to2s 3d. A steady demand' exists for malting barley, good samples readily fetching 4s 6d 5 seed barley, 5s 6d to 6s. ' The light Brigade is slowly discharging her cargo, and judging from; the condition of the portion already to hand we expect the whole will be landed in good order. _ Spirits are scarcely soy active, stocks have lately.been :augmented" J **sseveral lines ex Light Brigade and <*~3*#***,nentß from the neighbouring prot&ico' brandy in bulk may-now beJraeted at lis in bond ; ease brandy "at 31s.
