" Press " Oißce, Monday, January 1 3. The amount of business transacted during the past week does not point to any improvement in trade matters, holders of stocks still complaining of small sales. The capacity of our market is so limited, and the stocks held by all our wholesale houses so large, that it is impossible to work off any appreciable quantity in a limited time. It ia only by careful shipments of small quantities of imports that a buoyant tone can again be imparted to our present overtaxed market. • Beers, both in wood and bottle, are in limited request, and only first-class brands can be placed at payable rates. Martell's dark and Hennessy's pale brandies have been dealt in during the week, but only in small quantities; prices of both are stationary. Good Campbellton whiskey is in short supply ; a small lot changed hands at 21s, duty paid. Other spirits command ordinary attention. No change in teas, only good quality congous finding- purchasers, bugars are firm, owing to*late advices from the Australian markets ; but our retail houses being fairly supplied, no advance has yet been made. Sales of coloLial produce has taken place to s considerable extent. Silt butter finds purchasers at 8d to B£d per lb. Kegs charged at coopers' prices. Cheese is firm at 6£d to 7d, according to quality, and we are glad to find * that our cheese ie more in favour even than in former years. Flour is now quoted at £18 per ton for best silk-dressed. Bran and sharps remain at last week's quotations. One or two large lots of old wheat have changed bands at 6s per bu.-htl. The opening prices 6f new, we understand, will be 5s 6d, but as rust has appeared in most of our agricultural districts, an advance on that price may yet be made, as none of the new crop can be delivered for a fortnight to come. A demand has sprung up for oats, and prices have advanced 3d a bushel for ordinary feed, and 6d for best heavy sorts ; we now quote 2s 2d to 2s 6d as buyers' prices. Barley remains 3s 6d to 3s 9d. Beans and peas not quoted? Potatoes are only offering in small lots at retail prices. Hay cannot be quoted higher than £4 per ton, but holders are indifferent about selling, as the wet weather has spoiled the bulk of the late crops, and higher prices are expected to rule. Our Northern correspondent on Saturday writes :— The past week, from the tempestuous character of the weather, has kept back the ripening of the grain, which generally is in fair condition, aud in some instances it is feared there will be badly got hay crops. Hoot crops have improved under the saturation, for the whole week has been continuously ehowery. Gardens and orcharda as a rule are highly productive, and fruit is plentiful. Wilson and Alport sold as follows : —At the Cashel street cattle saleyards, on Saturday, three three-year-old store steers, £10 10* each; five two to three-year-old do do, £9 15s do; one do do do, £8 5s ; three young cows and heifers, £9 to Lll 5s each; two old cows, £6 10s and £6 15? do ; two firstclass cows were withdrawn at £12 and £15 At the Market-place saleyards a fair supply of pigs, poultry, and farm produce brought good prices.
