RETRENCHMENT.
TO THE EDITOa OF THE PBEBS. Sib, —I congratulate my f«llow-colouiste on I lie great change which hae apparentlj eonje over the minds of come of our represent&U?e» in the Provincial Council. On the evening of the 21at December, 1865) I warned the Provincial Council that bad times were ufc hand, and that retrenchment and economy were absolute!/ necessary, and X entreated the jnembera to inaugurate, the same by reducing in the first instance the salary of the Superintendent of the province (a now election being about to take place) from £1500 to £1000 per annum. On the division which ensued at the conclusion of the debate, four members voted for the motion and twenty fine voted against it. It might prove instructive if some of us were afforded an opportunity of comparing the speeches uttered on that occasion with the speeches reported as having been uttered in the Town Hull liitely on two anparate occasions. With this object in view I aekyouto do mc the favour oi reprinting the debate as it appeared in your issue of the 22nd December, 1865 5 and, if your space is too limited to admit the whole of the debate, perhaps you would contrive to reprint my speech on tb© occusion, together with the division list. I am, air, your obedient servant, J. Chaokoft Wilsos, 0.8. Cashmere, Nov. 25, 1867. [In compliance with Mr Wilson's request; we publish our report of the speech referred to in another column; —Ed. "Pbbss."]
