PUBLIC MEETING AT KAIAPOI.

In pursuance of a notice calling a public meeting of persons interested in the question of adopting come means of protecting the North road from the effects of the overflow of

the Waimakari i, a largely attended meeting took place on Saturday evening last at tho Kaikainui hotel. Among those present wo noticed the Hon. G L. Lee, MP C, and chairman of the Rangiora and Ma-ndevi le Road Board, and Messrs M. Dixon, MP. 0., J. Wylde, HPIC, C. Hillyard, M.P.C., C. Young, J. Clarke, J. Whitmore, D Coutte, J. Wilson, J. Lorrimer, E. Wilson, J Steven son, T. Pashby, G. Edwards, J. Baker, Dr.

Dudley, P. O. Tlirelkeld, W. Wright, J. Lowry, L; Maybher, E. A. Lock, W. Travis ; W. Coup, J. M.aindonald, and others. ;

The Chairman, the •. Hon. Gh Leslie Lee, having eiplained the object of the meeting, said that he did not consider the Kangioraand Mandeville Road Board, in whose district the injury was being committed, would be justified in making themselves liable or open to any claim for compensation which might be brought aguinet them by parties who might be affected by the proposed work. JVlr E. A. Lock, eurreyor to the Rangiora and Mandeville £oad Board, produced a plan of the district, and had also marked out the best course for the intended cutting, which would cost about £150 The following were the sections through which tlie cutting will bo carried, Nos. 23*7, 4*99, 4934, two Government section*-, 4907, 6630, half through 6630 and as the boundary between-2809 and 925. The cutting would be simply to make a lead for the overflow, so as to convey it to Coutt'a mill-race. Mr Wylde thought the question of compensation was a very small mutter, but neither the Eoad Board nor the Government ought to make themselves liable, though they might find the means aud entrust the carrying out of

fhe work to a local committee, who co Boon as their duties terminated could not possibly be held responsible, as was tho case in the erection of th& embankment for the protection of the island part of the town of Kainpoi. On the committee being appointed they could be entruited with the carrying out of tho

work, and he need hardly impress on thoia present the absoluto necespity for the work h-iiijT gone on with at on. o.
