[From the Melbourne papers.] QUEENSLAND. Brisbane, May 23. The Governor arrived last night. The rain has cleared away. Three hundred of the Maitland volunteers arrived to-night, to participate in the revie»v to-morrow. The Bombay takes 71,612 sovereigns. The Brisbane Parliament has been prorogued to June, with a view to a dissolution. The wool sales were small. Prices are slightly better. Hides and tallow are very dull, owing to the scarcity of tonnage for London. -Sales of Field's stout have been made at £5. Martell's brandy is firmer. Manilla cigars, 355. Sugars are declining. h May 24. The Bombay, royal mail steamship, sailed punctually to-day for Melbourne en route for Q-alle, with the English mails. To-day was observed as a public holiday. The weather was magnificent, and the attendance at the different out-door amusements was very large. His Excellency reviewed the troops and volunteers, and afterwards held a levee, at which the presentations were very numerous. The athletic sports, held on tho Albert cricket ground, lledfern, went off satisfactorily ; and the agricultural show at Paramatta was a success. The quarter sessions commence on Monday next. There are eighty-nine cases dowii for trial. A fire broke out in Castlereagh street last night, but it was extinguished before much damage was done. May 25. A new weekly journal is about to issue, to be called " The Legal and Professional Eegister." It is intended to be a chronicle of all legal, professional and insolvency information, and the recognized reference in all matters interesting to the legal profession. The first number is to be issued on the 3rd of June. The Governor's" birthday ball " was a great success. Eifty tons of quartz from Emu Creek reef have yielded 22*) ounces of gold. Other portions of the reef are equally rich. The Agricultural Show is well attended. Business is inactive. May 27. The schooner George has been totally wrecked near Buili. The crew were saved. Miss Dickson's body has been found in the Hunter Eiver. The markets are steady. Sugars have a tendency downwards ; the Clara Sayer's cargo was sold at auction. Small lots of fine crystals brought £4 I7e 6d, but the balance of the cargo was passed in. A large sale takes place to-morrow. Teas are quiet. Kay geneva, 9s lid. 872 cases of Barclay's stout, in faulty condition, sold at 68 Id to 6s 4d; pints, 3s 4d to 3s 6d. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Adelaide, May 27. The health of Sir D. Daly and Lady Daly is improving, much to the gratification of the residents here. They, however, are still invalids, The Moonta easy came on this morning at the Supreme Court, and was further postponed, owing to the recent change in the Attorney-Generalship, as suggested by Judge Boothby. The migration of Germans to Victoria and the Murray districts causes much dissatisfaction, and has led to strong suggestions from the press for the alteration of the present Land Act. Saturday's races on the old course were very successful. The attendance was large, and the sport good. The share market is stagnant. Moonta are placed at £90; National Bank, £5 4s; Adelaide Bank, £3 11s. Money is plentiful, but is advanced on first-class securities only. Exchange on England one-half per cent, premium for sixty days' sight bills. The sugar market ie slightly firmer. A j damaged parcel from Melbourne was sold this morning at an advance on previous rates. Import business is very dull, and a very quiet winter IS anticipated. The corn market is quiet; quotations are unaltered ; wheat, 4s 4d at the port; flour, £10 to £11.
