KAIAPOI MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
Thia Council met on Tuesday evening last. Present—All the members except Mr Woodford, who obtained leave of absence. J. 0. Porter, Keg., in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and signed, the Clerk's report was also read, which stated that the footpaths in Sewell street had been formed, and the fencing along the North road had been erected; the footpaths in different parts of the town had been shingled, previous to the wet neither setting in. The batance-sheet showed that, after paying liabilities amounting to £21 7s 3d, a balance of £128 Is 10d would be still on hand. From rent of bridge, £1610s 9d, and balance from last sitting £132 17e 8d; the receipts amounted to £149 8s sd. A letter was next read from the Secretary for Public Works, informing the Council that his Honour the Superintendent had assented to the levying of a shilling rate by the Council for the current year. A letter was next received from Matheson'a Agency, stating that if the Council intended to pile the bank of the river above and below their reserve, they would pay a share, but
wished the tramway connected with their store to be valued as £45 worth of improvements out of the £75 required to be expended by the terms of their agreement. Mr Dobbs mored, after some little discussion on the subject—"That the Council 6ee no reason to depart from the regulations laid down by them, and require from Matheson's Agency the full expenditure of £75, in iiccordauce with those regulations; and further, that they do not recognise the expenditure on the tramway as any part of the aforesaid sum, the said tramway being a privilege specially accorded to them. Mr Dudley seconded the resolution, which was unanimously carried. Mr Dudley directed attention to the funt that on the 30th June the Provincial Council's financial year would expire, and '.mlese the remainder of the grant due by them to the I Council was paid it would lapse. Tie moved— "That application he at oiu-e mi,'e for the sum of £120, the balance of the "rant due." Mr Kerr seconded the motion, whioh was carried. The Chairman drew attention to the existence of a nuisance near the Kaik>»inui hotel, when it was the clerk should see to its removal. Mr Dudley proposed that the following accounts be paid : —Pay-sheet, £1.1 13s Id ; Harris, £3 19s 4d ; Hunter, £5 14s. Mr Henwood seconded the motion, which was carried. The Clerk stated that since the adoption of the new rate of wages he believed more work had been done than at the old rate. Mr Dudley moved —"That the clerk see to the necessary rate-books being procured, and the rate being collected by August 1, 1867." Mr Henwood seconded the motion, which was carried. One or two documents received the approval of the Council, and were sealed. On the motion of Mr Henwood, the clerk was directed to see to the well in Peraki street, and effect some necessary alterations. Mr Hewlings moved —" That the clerk see to the shingling of the Peraki street footpaths " Mr Kerr seconded the motion, which was carried. The Boad Committee obtained a fortnight in which to draw up their report on the roads of the town. Tenders for metalling Jones street were opened : —From Belcher and Fairweather, offering to do the work at 3s per yard, and from John Armstrong, offering to do it at Iβ lid per yard. The latter tender was accepted. The Council then adjourned.
