THE CUSTOM-HOUSE.
TO THE KDITOE OF THE " PBB83." Sib,—l perceive by the report of the proceedings of the Chamber of Commerce, publiehediin your iseiie of this morning, that* one of the-members of that august body wishes the said chamber to come to some conclusion at to where the Custom-house is to be—at Lyttelton or Christchurch. Aβ is generally the case, these great questions are brought forward by men who have the least to do with them, and consequently cannot or do not take the trouble to understand them. ' No man having a proper mercantile knowledge of what is due to the main port of a province! the necessity of concentrating the Customs department with a view to economy end a proper staff, would ever contemplate doing Any but one thing in this province, viz., hating the seat of Customs at the port of -entryof the province—Lyttelton. This has already been decided by a vote in the Provincial Council; and I have yet to learn whether a body of men—l cannot call them inerohants, as they ought to be to constitute a Chamber of Commerce —are to say we will hate a Custom-house where we choose. I am, Sir, yo\ire obediently, Lyttelton. March 1, 1867.
