ELECTION OF MUNICIPAL COUNCIL, LYTTELTON.
Yesterday the annual meeting of ratepayers took place at noon, at the Town Hall, fo? the purpose of nominating four persons to fill the office of councillors in the place of Mr E. A. Hargreaves, Mr Dransfield, Mr Willcox, and Mr Baleetiee, -who retire in accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Ordinance. Mr Joseph Ward took the chair, at noon ; at this time there could not have been more than a dozen persons present. The Chairman commenced the proceedings by reading the advertisement calling the meeting, and afterwards made a few brief remarks respecting the business of those assembled, and stated that all the retiring members were eligible for re-election. Mr Kellaway proposed, and Mr William Graham seconded, the nomination of Mr George Tayler. Mr Grange proposed, and Mr Balestiee seconded, Mr J. S. Willcox. Mr J. Grubb proposed, and Mr W. Littlecott seconded, Mr Balestiee. Mr Holmes proposed Mr Hewstpne, who was seconded by Mr William Cummins. J Messrs J. Downie and S. E. Wright proposed and seconded Mr J. Wilkin. Messrs Webb and C. Shepherd proposed and seconded Mr H. Allwright. Mr S. E. Wright proposed Mr W. Eayner, but he declined the honor. Two other ratepayers were desirous of proposing Mr E. A. Hargreaves. The Chairman read a letter received from'him, stating that his business arrangements would prevent him accepting offioe. A chow of hands followed, and the following numbers were recorded for each candidate :—Balestiee, 13 ; Willcox, 12 ; Allwright, 10 j Tayler, 8 j Cummins, 8 $ Wilkin, 6. Mr Cummins demanded a poll. The Chairman announced that it would take place this day from ten o'clock to four o'clock p.m. The result of the poll would be made known at a quarter-past four. The Chairman read the balance-sheet showing the sums received and expended during the past year up to the 3ist December, 1866, showing a balance to the credit of the Council of £94, $a 3d. Messrs W. H. Hargreavee and Caro were elected auditors, and Messrs Perrin and W. Graham appointed to act as scrutineers daring the election. Messrs Baleetiee, Grubb, Wnghfc, and others, briefly addressed tho»e present, after which a vote of thanks to the chairman brought the proceedings to a close.
