RETURN OF WOOL SHIPPED AT KAIAPOI

Amongst other and material improvements that have been recently made in West-port, we have great pleasure in directing special attention to the new wharf, a section of which has been opened to the public and has been in use now some little time. It has been constructed by private enterprise, Mr Dreyer having been authorised to erect it and charge dues as compensation. It is fitted -with tramway, platform, &c, complete, and even- now in its unfinished etate vessels can discharge twenty tons per hour. In another three weeks it will be finished, and then provision will be made for discharging at the rate of fifty tone per hour. The present structure is only twenty feet in width, but another thirty feet will be immediately added. It extends seventy-two feet into the river beyond high-water mark, and vessels can get their cargoes out with ease lying alongside at any time of tide. The approach has been made good, the transfer of merchandise has thus been facilitated, and the cost of carriage proportionately reduced. This is a great boon to the mercantile community, and will no doubt be appreciated by traders on the coast. — " Westport Times," 22nd December. The Prospector, barque, tha first wool ship this season from Oamaru, arrived at her anchorage here at an early hour on Tuesday morning last. She had been towed to sea by the Favorite on Monday, after that tug had performed a like office for the Star of Tasmania, but notwithstanding the start in advance, the Prospector got into Port here eighteen hours and a-half before her. The Star had been driven further to the northward by strong adverse winds. The Prospector was .purchased two years ago for Otago, and has eiace made the following voyages ;— From Port Chalmers to Valparaiso and back, in 102 days, the quickest passage ever made from Port Chuhners to Valparaiso. Then to San Francisco ; San Francisco to Otago j Otago to Valparaiso ; thence to St. Antonio; from St. Antonio to Auckland ; Auckland to Otago ; Otago to Valparaiso ; Valparaiso to Mauritius ; Mauritius to Otago ; is all 75,000 miles in twenty-four months, out of which nine months had been spent in Sort. The remarkable runs made were, from itago to Valparaiso, first trip, a distance of 5500 miles, in 27£ days ; from Cape Horn to Cape of Good Hope, 4500 miles in nineteen days ; from Mauritius to Otago in thirtyseven days. This vessel will leave on or before 20th January instant, and is expected to make a quick passage home.—"Oamaru Times," Jan. 1. A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a Southland shipping company took place on Friday, the 2let ult., ut Mr Putellkow's hotel, Invercargill. The desirability of Invercargill possessing coasting vessels, steamers especially, was carefully debated, and the general feeling was evidently in favor of the formation of a company. After the question had been thoroughly ventilated. Mr M'Pheraon moved, and Mr J. Munro seconded, the following resolution :— "That it is desirable that a company should be formed for the purpose of procuring a vessel or vessels, the eaid association to be entitled the Southland Shipping and Steam Navigation Company (Limited)." The subject, soys the " Southland Newe," was taken up in earnest, and we bespeak for the project a success.— Hid.
