THE LATE STEEPLECHASE FEE CASE.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE "PBES3." Sib, —I beg you will allow mc to point out an error in your report of the proceedings in the Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. In questioning Chamberlain I asked him, "Did you not refuse to ride lor mc one race ?" Chamberlain answered, " Yes, because there was a rumor that if I rode Brown Stout, I should not let him win, owing to Lottery (in the same race) belonging to jJixon ;" instead of, as in your report, " Yes, when you wanted mc to ride for Lottery to win." The occasion of tho rumor was the known fact of Dixon and Chamberlain being old and present friends. For my own part, though wishing Chamberlain to ride, I much appreciated the straightforwardness of tho youn<* man, and consider now, as then, that no money would tempt him to lose a race for hie actual employer. However, though never anxious to " raeii ! into print on my private affaire," I cannot} allow the accidental imputation conveyed in | your report to pass unnoticed; and I have , the authority of Chamberlain himself to in- J i dignantly deny tbat any such arrangement was even ever proposed, or could have been carried ( out.
Moreover, were I a man that would hint at, or consent to such a proceeding, I never could hare held for so many years, nor mtill uphold the character of an industrious caterer for and inannger of the national pastime of horserucing. By the insertion of the above, you will oblige Yours, &c., Fkkd. I). Hamilton. A ugust 30.
