LYTTELTON MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

This Council held their weekly meeting on Monday evening, at tho usual hour. The following member, were present—Mr J. Ward (cliairman), Messrs Grubb, Willcox, Gee, Drausfield and Wright, The minutes of the former meeting having been read and confirmed, the outward correspondence was laid iipon the table. The following letters were read : —From Mr Fleming relative to the asphalte pavement in front of his premises, in London street, beiDg put in good repair; from the Provincial

Secretary, stating that his Honor the Superintendent should at once be? communicated with respecting tho delegation of powers under Police Ordinance to the Chairman of tho Council. A petition was presented from tho ratepayers of Oxford street, on tho cast side, between London street and Norwich Quay, praying the Council to layasphalte on that part of tho street, and covenanting to pay onethird of the cost opposite their respective dwellings. Moved by Mr Gee, and seconded by Mr Dransfield—" That the petition be received and adopted." The resolution was put and carried. The expenditure upon Norwich Quay from 1862 to date was then placed upon tho table. Moved by MrWiltcox, and seconded by Mr Grubb—"That a supplementary account of the actual outlay on the roadway, with what has been expended by the Council aud inhabitants upon tho footpaths and side channels, be prepared." Put and carried. A letter was then read from the President of the Colonists' Society, requesting that the sum of £20, voted as a grant-in-aid, should be be placed to the credit of the society. The Clerk was directed to acknowledge tho receipt of letter, und in reply to state that the Council would be ready to meet the wishes of tho society when the proper time arrived. On the list of estimated receipts and expenditure to the 31st December, 1866, being presented, it was moved by Mr S. Wright, and seconded by Mr Grubb :—" That a rate of fourpenje in the pound be levied." Carried. The report of the Inspector of Nuisances for the week ending 25th instant having been read, Mr Grubb called the attention of tho foreman of works to the danger of clay from the site being prepared for the Wesleyan chapel choking up the culvert in the event of a fall of rain. Mr DOyly, the Couucil's legal adviser, having informed them of the position in which Messrs Graham and Weybourne stood in regard to arrears of rent due to the Council, it was resolved:—"That tho clerk write to Messrs Graham and Weybourne, informing them of tho amount duo by them to the 25th December, 1865, and at the same time forward them a resolution passed December 26, 1865." On the motion of Mr Grubb, seconded by Mr Wright, the clerk was instructed to write to Mr Pavitt, church steward, requesting reply to the letter of 17th May, 1866, respecting the extension of the culvert in Exeter street. Resolved, that the four chains or thereabouts of kerbing and repairs of the upper end of Canterbury street be left in the hands of the Road Committee. The following tenders for the supply of 300 cubio yards of unbroken road metal, were read:—Nutter and Forrester, at per yard, _3 3d ; Graham and Weybourne, 7s ; Sherratt, Waterhouse, and Smith, 4s 5d ; David Kirby, 5s 9d ; Chalmers and Hall, 4s ■6d ; William Jeffreys, dark stone, 3s lid, light stone, 3s 9d. On the motion of Mr Jupp, seconded by Mr Dransfield, the tender of Messrs Chalmers and Hall was accepted at 4s 6d. The following accounts were passed :— Weekly pay sheet, £16 lis ; Town Clerk's salary for August, £16 13s 4d ; Richard Smith, three new pumps, &c, £119 8a 9d ; total, £152 13s Id. Instructions were given to the clerk to, call the attention of Mr Smith to damage done to the stonework around the well in Dampier's bay in putting down the pump, and to request him to have the same repaired. Mr Wilcox handed in notice of motion for Monday next: —" That a sum not exceeding £15, be appropriated for the purchase of tar for asphalting the east side of Oxford street." Resolved, that the Council do now adjourn to Monday, September 3, at six p.m.
