THE MANAWATU PURCHASE.
The following copy of a letter from Matene Te Whiwhi to Dr. Peatherston has been sent to us for publication. It will be observed that Te Whiwhi accuses Parakaia Te Pouepa of having signed his name without his permission. Whatever Parakaia's personal claims may be, there is no doubt that the name of Matene Te Whiwhi added greatly to the importance of the protest against the sale, and Parakaia must explain how he came to use Te Whiwhi's name without his permission :— [copt.] Otaki, Mci 9, 1866. Kia Petitone, —Tena koe. Kua kite au i toku ingoa ite nupepa. E hara i au i tuhi toku ingoa. Engari he mea pokanoa na Parakaia. Kaore au i kite, kaore au o tuhi. He mea pokanoa toku ingoa kite nupepa. Heoti ano. Nα Matene Te Whiwhi. True translation —James Hamlin, Interpreter. Otaki, May 9, 1866. To Eeatherston, —Salutations. I Have seen my name in the newspaper. I did not write my name, Rather a liberty of Parakaia's. I did not see ; I did not write it. My name has been inserted in the papers without my sanction. That is all. Nα Matene Te Whiwhi.
