TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF CHBISTCHURCH. /~i ENTLEMEN,—I have found, on enquiry, that VT a considerable part of the constituency had pledged themselves to vote for Mr. Macpherson before my address appeared,' and also that there is a very general feeling that Christchurch should be represented by a member of the mercantile class. I am not therefore disposed to put you to the trouble of a contested as a candidate has presented himself who is in every way worthy of your support. Thanking those gentlemen -who have kindly promised mc their support, I remain, gentlemen, Your obedient servant, 6-28 Edwabd Jolucb. TO J. D. MACPHERSON, Esq. Morton Thomas Howes 8. Machin H. Wynn Williams John C. Angus John Hill Christchurch, June 26, 1864. * -To William Wilson, Esq., and the other Gentlemen who have signed the Requisition. Gentlemen. —I have much pleasure in acceding to your request. During the last two years I have had a strong desire to obtain a seat in the Provincial Council, but hitherto have been obliged, by the restraints of business, to keep free of any active concern in politics. It has lately been my ambition, while looking forward to an election, to represent Christchurch ; I therefore come forward the more heartily at the present opportunity. The necessity for immediate action, so that I may obtain a fair chance in a contest with an honorable opponent already canvassing, precludes mc from here devoting much time to the expression of my political views. . * , I have a large interest at stake in the prosperity of this province, and would support any endeavor to carry on remunerative public works that would develop its resources $ but I would, at the same time, bring what business sagacity I am possessed of to bear against any undertakings which would not be of that character, or would land the province in embarrassment. ■ . To form a good road to the West Coast is, I consider, the first and most urgent great public work that the Government should carry out to completion, and going hand in hand with that, shoi'ld be the improvement of Lyttelton Harbor. The importance of both these works, especially to the mercantile community, can hardly be over-rated. Should I be elected, I shall make it my endeavor to be on the side of every scheme tending to the social advancement of the province, more especially its educational and religious institutions. I have -warm sympathies besides with all movements promotive of the comfort, eobriety, industry, intellectual improvement, and rational amusement of the people. I beg, in conclusion, that it be distinctly understood I am pledged to no party, while I have certain political sympathies I trust I shall always be found voting for " measures, not men." I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, J. Dbtjmmond Mactkbbson. Christchurch, 26th June, 1865. ! 6-28 HEBEFOBD HOUSE, HEBEFOBD STREET.
