The Waipara, Captain Swansea, leftNehon about half-past ten o'clock a.m. est Thursday last, meeting with heavy weather, j put hack to Totoranui on Friday at mid-day, and lay ] at anchor there till Saturday. An attempt was made toproseoute the voyage, but it was again found, necessary to anchor under Farewell Spit for some time, whsn she once more started for Hokitika, and made every effort, both by sail and steam, to reach this port m time for the tide, but was unfortunately about an hoar too late, the -New. 7aslsnd having entered about that time .before, she arrived. Came to an anchor about three o'clock, a heavy swell xoHingin from the wast, and all making up their minds- for a bad night. The wind increased, till by 10 o'clock it blew very heavily, and though steam was kepi up the. whole night to ease. the cables, it was necesary about two o*dock to slip and run oat to' sea. This was done, heavy seas breaking- . clean over her, even to the height of the funnel, and the ssfls were soonTeduced-"to amass of ribbons. At length, the vessel being very deep, and sea after sea continuing to break over her in rapid succession, it* was plain that the only alternative left to save the lives on board was to make foe.the shore and beach her.
