KOWAI ROAD BOARD.

"We have heen requested to publish the following report from the Boad Surveyor of the Kowai Boad Board for the information of the ratepayers ; — Boad Board Office, January 12,1865. Six, —I have the honor to forward to the Boad Board my annual report upon road works done in the Kowai district during tbe year 1864-8. The wof-ks effected by the Boad Board during the past year comprise :— 1. Improvements on Great North road. 2. Forming and opening out two main lines ot road; the Bangbm Ford road, and the Mount Grey road. 8. Improvements oh bye-roads. Ko*__H Boad.—The improvements on this road extend over a dittanoe of eleven miles, and they consist chiefly in metalling the road from the Ashley hank to Saltwater Creek ; filling with day a great number at holes where the hard crust that forms a : good natural road for several miles had been broken . ■ through by continual traffic ; also, forming, ciaymg and metalling the road through sand hills in Bever_l : places far a total length of half a mile. Tbe catting near Brown's Bridge has also been greatly improved by drainage. and direct line nine miles in length, running in a northerly direction through the heart of the Mount Grey Downs, from Saltwater Creek to the North Kowai, and it forms a most useful and important addition to the means of communication of the district. The road has already been formed for a distance of six miles. It contains two small bridges, thirteen culvert, and for half-a-mfle has been carried on an embankment through a deep swamp. That portion of the road contained between the two Kowais has been rendered passable for light traffic by a few culverts and steep cuttings. R-HGIOB-. Ford Boad is the second trunk road of the district, and when continued to the westward will form a main line, running from east to west, from the North road to the Makerikeri. It has been metalled for one mile and formed for two miles. Btk-Boads. —Only a small sum has been expended on bye-roads, and the works consist prin-ipally in a few cuttings and culvert in places where urgently required. Nearly a mile of road has also been formed over very rough ground.
