HEATHCOTE ROAD BOARD.

We Lave been requested to publish for the information of the ratepayers in the Heathcote district, the following annual report of the Surveyor of the district, together with the statement of receipts and expenditure:— Ferry road, December 31, 1864. GtKTtEMBK, —I have the honor to lay before you the following annual report upon the works which have been executed in the district daring the past ye*rj end also a statement of the money receipts and e^enditure. Slhwbb Boas. —This is the first item as shown m the •tatement under the heading of expenditure, and tie amount, £875 Is 2d has been spent upon the ntA in the following manner, -viz.:—£49l 14e 4d for miking new portions, and the remainder for keeping the line from the Heathcotc Swing-bridgo to the tcp of Erans* pass, in repair.

Fbbby Road.—There has been a sum of £437 4s 9d expended upon this road, of which £114 Ss has been for re-metaliing that portion near the Swing bridge, £65 for making a footpath on the south side of the road from the Christchurch quay, nearly to the Steam wharf, and the remaining sum has been spent in keeping the road in repair. liaiDLE-pATH.—The amount expended upon this road is £332 14s, of which £150 was for lowering that portion of the road between the Ferry and the new bridge, £69 15s for re-metalling where the old metal had worn out, £12 10s for filling dangerous side ditches, and the remaining amount for repairs of the whole line. Colombo Boas.—On this road a sum of £518 5s 7d has been expended, £151 19s 9d of which has been for forming and metalling new parts ; £301 11s 10d for re-metalling from the South Belt of Christ-church, to the junction of the old Windmill road ; and a portion near the hill. The remaining amount for general repairs. Haytbb's Road and Gowax's Road—The sum of £495 haa been spent upon these roads, of this amount £60 was for a piece of land diverting the road near Wilson's bridge ; £385 10s for forming and metalling both these roads, and the balance for repairs. Hill's Road—This line of road has cost a sum of £576 Os 6d, and of this £193 was for metalling the j hill near Mr Aynsley's ; £269 7s 6d for forming new portions, and the balance for general repairs, such as culverts, &c. Wizson's Road—The amount of £3310s has been spent in keeping this road in repair. Land and Buildings—Under this head I have included the section of land upon which the Board Office stands, the cost of which was £100, and the oflices, stable, and fencing, £228 13s lid. Opawa Roads—The sum of £107 8s has been expended upon these roads, £75 of which was for forming and metalling new portions, and the remainder for general repairs. I would remark that the sum of £90 of the tot-.il cost of these roads was received by the Board from voluntary contributions. Stanmobe Road.—On these roads £328 14s ha 3 been spent; of this amount £15516s 6d has been for forming and metalling ; £97 17 6d for metalling portions, and the balance for repairs and culverts. Dyeb's Pass Road.—There has been during the past year £101 15s expended upon the above road, of which £23 has been for making deviations from the old line, £60 for widening some portion, and the remainder far keeping the whole line in repair. Heathcotb sSwing-beidge.—The sum of £207 4s 9d has been expended upon this bridge in the following manner, viz, £132 for toll house; boat, £10; lamps, £3 17s; toll board, £9 4s 9d; toll bar and repairs, £9 12s; and the sum of £42 Us has been paid for collecting tolls previous to the leasing the bridge. Slaf&hteb-hotjse Road. —On this road £80 & Gd has been spent, £45 12s 6d for forming a portion near the City Reserves, of which sum the City Council contributed £30 8s 4d; the remaining amount of £34 16s has been paid for general repairs. Gabalnd's Road.—As shown in the accompanying statement, £78 5s has been expended on this road, of which £75 8s was for forming and the remainder for repairs. Kerb's Road.—The sum of £1 9s haa been paid for work done on this road. Helmobe Road. —On this road the sum of 14s has been spent. Avon Riveb Road. —There has been expended upon the above road £22 9s 6d, cf which sum Mr. Wright contributed £1017s towards forming. Planx. —Under the heading of plant is included two punts, tools, office furniture, theodolite, level, map of district, seal and instruments, amounting to £170 11s 3d. Heathcote RrVEE Road. —On this road the total amount expended has been £263 7s, of which £257 15s was for forming new portions, and £5 12s for repairs. Casiiei. Stbeet East. —The sum of £18 has been paid for forming that portion between the east belt of Christchurch and the Stanmore road: Opawa Road Bridge:—This bridge was made by hired labor at a cost of £46 10s 30d: Dbainage.—The amount of £154 193 has been expended in making about half-a-mile of new drain near the Quay; deepening Jackson's Creek from the Stanmore road to the Ferry road ; also, Bell's creek the whole length, and clearing all the main drains near the Hills road, and Colombo road. The last five items on the statement show the amounts for assessing the district, making the ratepayers' roll, the Surveyor's salary for ten months, printing and advertising, and books and stationery, amounting to £563 10s 2d, for the above items. I will conclude by stating that the total length of roads, newly made in the district since the Board has had the management of them, is nine and a-half miles, and to an average cost of £2 2s 6d per chain : the whole of which, as also the old roads, are in good working order.
