The speed at which the trip ] lrom town to was madesk an iaulcatkm of what the Samson is now likely to, *eeompU»b, compared with < -lint she did wtth her list 'heller and unimproved engine. From wharf to wharf she ran the distance in 4< minotes, i _eal--t-OOdtideanda-ti- > . hy the long channel hea-highe-t apeedwaaas ' Mtolafl-M of the wheel la a minute, but her average ■peed is bow aa mud- as thirty-four, and her
boners are capable of keeping up a steady pressure of 20 lbs. With the pressure and speed, and tbe good bold of the water which her construction gives her, she ought to be able to tow under any circumstances the largest vessels resorting here, her speed being greater than that of any other. One great consideration is that her new boilers will effect a saving in the cost of fuel of about 50 per cent On her trip down to Port, Mr. Parry, engineer, and Mr. Hamilton, Government Inspector, accompanied tbe vessel, and found everything to work smoothly and satisfactorily, with the high rate of speed we have described. With such assurance of her capabilities. Captain IfGill naturally fcelß proud as to what she can achieve, and satisfied that the large amount her improvements have cost has been well expended, and the public may feel well assured that, in the hands of Captain M'Gill she will be wrought to the advantage of all interests.— JWtf, Dec 19. The barque Affiance sailed from Newcastle on Friday, December. She had S.W. winds during; nearly all the passage, and N.K. winds along the coast. In addition to her cargo of coals, she brings some fine specimens of the Newcastle coals, which are intended for the New Zealand Exhibition. On her last passage from this port to Newcastle the Affiance encountered severe galea which prevailed, and narrowly escaped wreck, losing her anchor and chain, and sustaining some damages, which, with other repairs, detained her at that port— lbid, Dec. 20. The pilot schooner Caroline proceeded to Molyneux Bay on Saturday morning, with Captain Lowden, chief pilot on board, for the purpose of having a fresh buoy placed upon the moorings there. The large iron buoy which was taken down was safely attached to the mooring, but, in subsequently overhauling the chain, the schooner's windlass capsized, this being the third or fourth occasion on which a similar accident has occurred, and she has returned to port this afternoon. The steamer Tuapeka was seen lying in Puerua Creek, but there were no other vessels in the river visible from the entrance.— lbid, Dec 20.
