The Southern Cross of the 17th instant reports .— There have been two sales by auction darinsr the ■week, which bare somewhat indicated the state of the market
Some of the prices obtained wrre very fair, but there were 1 »everal instances of goods being sold for far less than Melbourne and Sydney rates. At Messrs Ridings and Dow- < den's butter, in good condition, was sold for 4jd to sjd i per lb. and rice for lid per lb. At Messrs Alfred Woolley and Cos sale, on the 14th instant, sperm candles. iUiht j weights, brought B|d p<>r lb. in a teu-l<ox lot ; full weights of the same brought 10J.1, for a small parcel only; pint I pickles brought ?s 6d, and only one-third of the parcel sold; , Cork butter brought only 5Jd per lb; Keiller's confectionery fetched 12£ d, and Swallow's Melbourne lancy j !>iscuir, ; mould caudles (Melbourne-make), s}d ; maizena. <£d ; Belfast bacon, Ofd ; fine salt. £3 19s to ' £4 5s per ton ; Colman's mustard. 9d ; coffee, withdrawn at *d ; split pea*, lfd—only ten casks sold ; Hunt's single and double and diamond port. 6s to 6d 3d; London and Colonial i Company's stout, ss, duty paid; and Byass's bottled porter, 10s to 10s 6d—sold in small lots of ten casks each. Two tons of Melbonrne silk-dressed flour fetched £21 10s per ton, ( and two tons of Adelaide £22 Ids. at which price it was withdrawn. Many of the above prices are very low. and a* i the market is overstocked with goods, there should at least be some ct-ssation of imports until present supplies are ! considerably reduced. When the fine weather sets in there , will no doubt be a brisk trade done, and until then low prices for goods, in any quantity, must be the rule. There i is no alteration in flour. The recent intelligence from Caafornia will not tend to depress it, and £25 will be the > ruling price for some time- There is about three months , supply on hand, independent of commissariat stores, and a few more shipments will supply the market until the next harvest in the colonies comes "in, which it is to be hoped will be a plentiful one. The firm we alluded to last week as having suspended payment, have been allowed to resume, time being given. The liabilities are said to be about £6,000. MESSRS STYAK AND HCXTER's REPORT. Horses—There waa abont the usual number of inferior horses shown, but few sales were effected, the highest pricps bring £30.
