CHRTSTCHUECH. GTNrSASIOI. A meeting was hchl last evening at Bonuington's Rooms, considering that it wss mail night, there was a very good attendance of gentlemen interested in the format ion of a Gymnastic Association. W. Wilson, Esq., occupied the chair, and stated that a* it had been considered both feasible and desirable to establish a gymnasium id Christchurch, by private subscription or otherwise, as might be determined, it was proposed to hold a preliminary meeting to discuss the subject. Steps had already been taken by a provisional committee, in order to place plans, estimates, and other information before the meeting now assembled. The Secretary then read the report of the committee, and the substance of the proposed scheme was embodied in the following resolutions :— Proposed by Mr. Crosbie Ward, and seconded by Mr. St. Quentin, and carried unanimously :—" That it is desirable to establish a gymnasium in Christchurch in such a manner that it may be a permanent institution." Proposed by Mr. G. Sale, and seconded by Mr. T. M. Ollivier":—" That in the opinion of this meeting the subject is one of such interest to the community at large that it is desirable to place it on a basis by which the greatest number of individuals can participate in the scheme, and therefore, that a joint stock company, with limited liability, be formed for the purpose of erecting a gymnasium in this city, and carrying out a complete working of the same ; the Cftpiful to b 9 #1999 HI W shares of two pounds each." nolioDoaoi mil in nl »ikk«»'»l ••• * Cooke : " Xiliit a working commiilec be appomed To carry out the foregoing resolutions, to receive applications For shares, to L-riquire fixrtlier as to tlie most desirable site and description for" a builJlllg, Allll tO report to a meeting of intending shareholders, to be called at an early clay, by advertisement." Crosbie desired to retain office as hon. secretary pro tan. The Chairman then stated that it would be the duty of the committee to draw up a prospectus defining the contemplated undertaking, showing the cost and probable receipts, and explaining the principles upon which the Gymnastic Association should be conducted. The proceedings then terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair.
