THE STEEPLECHASE.

TO THE KDITOB OF THE • PRESS. , Sir,—l ehall feel much, obliged by your inserting the following correspondence in your paper. It is the last I shall trouble you with on the Steeplechase. I am, Sir, Your obedient servant, Wμ. 'moMsoK. My Dear Oakes, —On my return to Cliriatchuroh this evening from the South, my attention wae drawn to a letter in the Press from Mr. W. H. Percnral, in which he adheres to his former assertion which I" had explicitly contradicted, "that Mr.Hyde dismounted and came forward, saddle in hand, to be weighed. " Mr. Percival tells only the truth -when he says that " cither he or I must be wrong," and it must be gratifying to his friends to know that he has made one statement at all events in connection with this matter.. which every one will implicitly believe. Mr. Hyde and yourself can easilyset the matter at rest as to whoso • version is the tight one, and I shall be obliged by your doing so, in order that the saddle may be put on. the right horse. An error in judgment, or a mistaken opinion, may be forgiven, but where one or the other of two men makes a distinct misstatement. of fact, it is only fair that the public should know which of them it is. . I am, my dear Oakes, Faithfully yours, Wμ. Thomson. O. W. Oakes, Esq. J Chriatchurch, August 13, 1864. MyDear Thomson, —There can be no mistake as towho is in the wrong. Mr. Hyde did not dismount, and the letter sent by you to the Press on the subject was correct in every particular. Fours truly, O. W. Oakes. W. Thomson, Esq. Christchurch, August 14, 1864. [We beg to add that Mr. Hyde, -who rode Mr. Oakes , horse, called at our office and stated that be did not dismount. On the whole we fear the public will not think that the owner of Jessie has not improved the appearance of things by hie correspondence.] . •
