SAILED, NIL ~The Brie ArsTKALiATf—Fourteen men landed in Lyttetton yesterday afternoon, having: been brought up from Pigeon Day in Stanley's mail boat They stated that they took their passage from Invercargill for Auckland in the brig Australian, commanded by Captain Hughes, fur which they paid the agents, Messrs. Calder and Co,, £5 each. She leftTthere on Sunday, the 1 Jth instant, and ou the second day out the vessel was found to be very leaky, and alter working-at fhe pumps for lour days they became choked tip. Recourse was then had to baling- out the water, which famed considerably on them. When off Port Chslmers, hey hoisted nignafs of distress; a steamer passed them five miles off, but did not go to their assistance. "With great difficulty they kept her afloat, and many of them lost all but what they stood upright in. On Friday last they made for Akaroa harbour; they ran her ashore, where she now lies ou the beach, high and dry. She was found to be leaky near the bows, and, the timbers being rotten, she ought not to have been sent to sea. They made application to the authorities at Akaroa to compel the captain to return it portion of the passage money, but were referred to the Kesident Magistrate at this port, who has now their case under consideration. On leaving Invercarjrill there were 170 in the steerage, besides about 14 cabin passengers, and it was intended to call iv at Pieton. The dry ot-Dnnedin arrived in port soon after midnight on Sunday, having left Dtinedin on Saturday afternoon. Bhe had on boar.i 2 >0 diggers en route for l'ictou, aud left at Jl yesterday morning for that port.
