MELBOURNE.
The Argus of the 11th inst. reports as follows : —
"A good many transactions took place in the flour market in the earlier part of to-day, and after the publication of the news from California, by way of Auckland, the market became highly excited, and all parcels in the market at or under £22 for Tasmania, and £24 10s for Adelaide, becume quickly cleared oil" nnd the market closed with buyers at higher ratesFoe Adelaide wheat, 9s 3d per bushel has been paid, but holders look for higher prices, and in some instances have refused belter offers.
The advices, as published in a second edition of the Argtts to-day, gives the price of flour at Cidifornia as having advanced. The prices quoted for wheat represent 3s Sd to 4s 2d per bushel, and for oats 4s per bushel. Further intelligence from this quarter will be looked for with iutorest, and until such time as we have some reliable information respecting the supplies to come forward from California and the west coast, this market will doubtless be subject to fluctuations. In ttfher merchandise, the markets are very ilat- At public auction, Messrs. Greig and Murray offered a miscellaneous assortment, which drew many people together, but many of the goods had to be passed in. With the import houses, trans actions by private sale have been light. A lendenc to operate in rice, following the other grain, is alnios the only noticeable movement.
