RESIDENT MAGISTRATES COURT. Friday, November 13. [Before JosEi'U Bbittax, Esq., R.M.] John M'Carthy was convicted, on his own confession, of stealing goods to the value of £4, being the property of Mr. Thomas Rcvell, residing with the Bcv. H. Torlesse at Okain's Bay. Xho Resident Magistrate senteuced tho offender to fourteen clays' imprisonment with hard labour. . A case against John Murphy for larceny was dismissed, the prosecutor not appearing. Alfred Ilornbrook was fined £200 on two informations charging him with being the owner of 6000 scabby sheep. The fines were paid at once ns tho defendant could not show that his sheep were clean within the last six months. Robert Ross, for Messrs. Aikman & Wilson, was fined £5 on tiro informal ions, charging him with driving sheep to Cliriatchurgh from Lyttelton for the purpose of selling them, in contravention of the Ordinance. Defendant thought that if they were sold and killed, as in this instance, there was no necessity for dressing them. Tho Bench said there could be no doubt as to tlie strict ltiw of the case, and they must fine defendant.
