THE WBICK OF THE CUTTETt THISTLE
The Southern Cross of the 12th August gives the following further particulars of the wreck of the cutter Thistle to which we alluded yesterday :—" We hare received the following particulars of the wreck of this vessel and the lose of her crew and passengers at Kawhia. It appears that the j melancholy occurrence took place on 3rd August, between four and five o'clock in the evening, as the ill-fated vessel was attempting to enter the north channel of the harbor. Tho cutter Favorite was entering the harbor by the south channel at the same time, but could render no assistance, as it was nearly dark and the breakers were very heavy. All on board the Thistle perished, and the only body tliat has been recovered since is that of Mr. Charleton. The Natives brought it on the following day to the late residence of the deceased, whore it was interred in the orchard. It is a singular circumstance that the body was washed on shore quite near to the residence of the deceased, which is five miles from the scene of the wreck. The Natives evinced the most friendly feeling towards Mrs. Charleton in her bereavement. The deceased had been a settler iv Kfiwhia for 25 years. Little or no property was recovered from the Thistle, as she soon bocanie a total wreck."
