HEATHCOTE DISTRICT. To JOHN OLLIVIER, Esq., W. WILSON, Esq., the other gentleman who signed the Requisition, and the Electors of the Heathcote District. ENTLEMEN,—I regret extremely that in a vT hasty moment I accepted your requisition, and allowed myself to appear as a candidate for the vacancy in the Provincial Council for your district, as I now find I must withdraw, being satisfied that according to the present laws for regulating elections, I am disqualified to take my seat. I would have done so at once had I sooner been convinced of the fact, but when I tell you that with the same qualifications, and without having lost any real interest in any property I then had, I sat in the Provincial Council for two sessions, and have voted repeatedly since, (coupled j with the fact that I have never received any j announcement of my disqualification), you will believe I was somewhat at a loss to account for my not being on the roll. It may be the duty of all to register, but that all read the Act as to Registration in a proper manner is doubtful; and when an old freeholder who has been a representative finds himself scored off the rolls without notice, he cannot but be excused for having accepted the flattering requisition you were pleased to present him with. Thanking all who promised mc their kind support. I am, yours faithfully, Mabk Speot. Christchurch, September Ist, 1863. End of this Dats Advertisements. STEAM TO DUNEDIN WHARF.
