TO THE EDITOR OF THE 'PRESS.'
Sib—As I believe I was the informant of A Z as rogards wool being carted from one wharf to another, and as AZ is not at home, I wish to say A Z has made a mistake in calling wool grain, but no doubt A Z will answer for himself when he comes back. Yours, &.c, B.Y.
TO THB BDITOB OF THB ' PBE3S.' Ma. Editob.—Being Presbyterians, we were as usual at St. Andrew's Church last Sabbath, and were pleased to hear our worthy pastor announce from the pulpit, that the yearly statement of accounts would be ready for distribution this afternoon, and to be hod from the Treasurer on calling for. Taking interest in the financial affairs of our Church, we gladly embraced the opportunity afforded us, and were glad to find the Church accounts were on the whole satisfactory. To our pleasant surprise we found appended a statement of the Educational Grant to the Presbyterian body; from which I cannot refrain from giving you a statement. H.—EDUCATION GRANT. j IKCOMB. j Grant Paid by Government £1100 0 0 AVEBAGE BATE OP PAYMENTS OK ACCOUNT OF BACH SCHOOL, ETC. Christchureh Academy . . £200 0 0 North Christchureh (boys') School 66 0 0 South Cliristchurch (jjirls") School 80 0 0 Kaiapoi . . , , . 70 0 0 Lincoln 50 0 0 Governor's Boy . . . 40 0 0 Lyttelton 125 0 0 Akaroa 40 0 0 Arrowhenua . . . . 80 0 0 Passage money for Teachers . 153 10 0 Conditional Grants in offer. . 210 0 0 £1114 10 0 Now, Mr. Editor, we always understood (perhaps you can correct us) that all schools receiving Government aid had to refund one-third of their
loot upon receiving such aid. Now, Sir, you wfll perceive by the figure* before yoja, that no such refunds are admitted into the balance sheet i it seems strange tome, from the high character of the Presbyterian schools, that there u> not one of them self-supporting. Mr. Editor, you that can wield the whip on obuees, can you tell mc where , the drone is? You will also perceive there ii an expenditure of £14 10s. in excess of income. We wonder who is IVcoeixrcr, and why such a balance on the wrong sido is not credited ac due to: him ; ea» he be a Scotchman ? On the whole, this educational statement has an ambiguity about it, which contrasts very unfavourably with the cleor and lucid statement of accounts emanating from the Treasurer of Che Deacon's Court. Would the Government accept such returns, in their present undetailed form ? . I am, yours, SicoAß. c~ Christchurch, April 23,1863.
