Smallest Local Body?

The Orapiu Road Board has a strong claim to the distinction of being New Zealand's smaliest local authority. The board chairman, Mr C. L. Mclntosh, told the Local Government Commission in Auckland that his board controlled an area of 86 acres ,at the south-eastern tip of Waiheke Island — about twenty miles from the Auckland Chief Post Office. He said the district was constituted by procdamation on January 18, 1921. It had a permanent population of six, and an average weekend population of twelve to fifteen. The board comprised four members. Some board members spent the weekends only in the district, said Mr Mclntosh. The board met "ftve or six times" a year, and meetings usually lasted about half an hour. Capital value of the district in 1948 Was £5200.
