Royston’s Show Bright And Clever
While it could hardly live up to its claim to be the biggest show ever to visit the town, Royston’s Overseas Variety Show, which played to a fairly large attendance in the Grand Theatre on Wednesday night, must certainly be one of the brightest.
The smallness of the show does it no discredit for the versatility of its artists is one of its features.
Star performer, from the audience’s point of view, was Royston as a ventriloquist. His handling of his dolls Skeeter and Nellie was superb. t Next in line for popularity and, for sheer ability unequalled in the show was a remarkable youngster who made easy work of three parts —Marvello, the boy magician, Frogman, the boneless wonder, and Peter Crago, the dancer. In every part, he was outstanding. It was the mannerisms of Eddie Ash, “the funny fellow” rather than his acting ability, which appealed to the crowd.
The song and dance items staged by women members of the cast went well.
Like most vaudeville show jokes, those put across by Royston and his gang were inclined to the risque type but they had the merit, in most cases; of being clever and really Anyway, the crowd roared. 'I
There was a swing and polish to this bright little show that its Whakatane audience thoroughly enjoyed.
