TWO IMPORTANT REFORMS IN BOXING LAWS
Two important reforms in boxing laws are contemplated by the New Zealand Boxing Association. One is that a boxer who is knocked down must stay on the canvas until the count of eight and the second provides for a system of three judges with the referee only in control of the contest.
The annual conference agreed on the introduction of these rules on completion of registration and incorporation of the revised rules which have undergone special over • haul and have been brought up to date.
The first is purely, one for trial during the next 12 months and meanwhile it will be purely discretionary on referees. The old system of two judges and referee is being employed for the New Zealand amateur championships.
Unique Boxing Honour Delegates were welcomed by the mayor of Greymouth, Mr F. Boustridge, and the president-elect of the association, Mr A. Beban, president of the Greymouth Boxing Association. Mr Beban has occupied the Greymouth post for 27 years and has had the unique honour of occupying the Dominion presidency for the third occasion.
Tributes were paid to the part played by boxing officials at the 1950 Empire Games at Auckland, and speakers considered that the boxing was the best conducted of any section. The George Bush Memorial Bell for the light-heavyweight division was presented to the New Zealand Boxing Association by the Auckland association, in appreciation of the services to boxing of the late Mr " George Bush as a referee and official.
The annual report recorded that there were two new associations, Ellesmere and Stratford, The latter having been re-formed.
