Collection For U.N.A.F.C. A street collection for United Nations Appeal for Children was held jn Whakatane on Friday. Three men and 12 women assisted. The collection was organised by the Borough Council. The response was good. A list of contributions will be published on Wednesday.
Girls To Nurse A number of girls from the Whakatane High School will be spending their second term holidays nursing at the Whakatane District Hospital. They will learn the: elements of nursing with a possible view of taking up the profession when they leave school.
No Power Cut Decision No decision had been given by the Bay of Plenty Electric Power Board up to the week-end on the Whakatane Borough Council’s request that the 10.30 p.m. to midnight power cut in the Borough be done away with. Efforts made by the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, to contact the Board’s officers by telephone had been unsuccessful.
Increased Fares Several bus travellers from Whakatane were affected in the increase in fares of Railways Road Services which came into operation yesterday. The increases range from 3d tc 2s 6d and cover all passenger fares over ss. Many people buying tickets yesterday did not realise until reminded of the increased fares.
Football Dance Mr J. Forbes made a capable M.C. and kept things moving with a swing at the United Football Club modern time dance held in the Caledonian Hall on Saturday. The large crowd danced to the music of Freddie Burt’s orchestra and the lucky winners of the Monte Carlo were Mrs J. Dixon and Mr E. Low:
