TAURANGA DEFEATS EDGECUMBE Playing for the Jack Cup Tauranga proved far superior to Edgecumbe in all departments in a representative hockey match on Saturday. From the commencement Tauranga gave the Edgecumbe defence no opportunity to settle down and with good combination and understanding between the backs and the forwards -soon found Edgecumbe in trouble.

After half time witli the score 3-1 in Tauranga’s favour Edgecumbe attacked strongly but the Tauranga defence held. A quick attack by Tauranga added to their score. Edgecumbe pressed hard but failed to score. For Tauranga goals were scored by N. Stewart 2, B. Parkinson 2; Edgecumbe, O. Laurie 1. A. Crook and N. Giles controlled the game.

In a women’s match Tauranga beat Edgecumbe 1-0 for the Barry Cup.

Under ideal conditions and before a large crowd 18 teams competed in A and B grades in a knockout tourney hockey tournament at Edgecumbe yesterday when some fasthockey was seen. The games were of two 15-minute spells, at the end of which extra time was played if scores were still even. The tournament concluded the season for the Central Bay of Plenty. In the A grade Matata won the men’s section and Te Teko the women. The B grade went to Otakiri Stars (men) and Huimai (women), In a 75 yards sprint held in conjunction D. O’Brien won the women’s final and I. Ellis the men’s final.

After the tournament Te Teko and Edgecumbe played a competition game, Te Teko winning by 8 goals to nil, thus putting them in an unbeatable position in the B grade competition and win the Marx Cup for the season.
